Lexus NX

2026-09-24 16:30:00

The Lexus NX is a core contender in the global compact luxury SUV segment. Since its debut in 2014, the NX has rapidly established itself as a primary sales pillar for the brand worldwide, courtesy of its unmistakable avant-garde design and signature Lexus craftsmanship. By 2026, the current second-generation NX has undergone its mid-lifecycle refresh, further cementing its appeal in the premium family SUV market through a diversified powertrain line-up (spanning petrol, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options) alongside an upgrade to the Lexus Interface digital ecosystem.

Model Overview

Positioned as a compact luxury SUV, the core proposition of the Lexus NX lies in striking a seamless balance between dynamic styling and luxurious practicality.

Market tags: Compact luxury SUV, TAZUNA cockpit, multi-powertrain line-up, proven reliability.

Product highlights: Built on the GA-K platform, the second-generation NX delivers significant gains in body rigidity and weight reduction. The interior embraces the "TAZUNA" cockpit concept, utilising a driver-focused layout to enhance driver engagement and vehicle feedback. For the 2026 model year, refined updates have expanded the F SPORT Handling grade across all powertrain variants to cater to diverse driving dynamics requirements.

Market positioning: With official prices primarily spanning the RM45,000 to RM65,000 bracket, the model targets young professionals and modern compact families seeking urban sophistication, everyday versatility, and a premium aftersales ownership experience.

Development History

Origins: In 2014, amidst surging global demand for compact luxury SUVs, Lexus developed the first-generation NX on the Toyota RAV4 platform, filling the entry-level luxury SUV gap positioned below the RX in its line-up.

Generational evolution:

2014–2021 (First Generation): Made a dramatic impact in the luxury car scene with its bold "Spindle Grille" styling, quickly becoming a key growth catalyst for the brand.

2021 to present (Second Generation): Migrated to the GA-K platform, marking a massive leap forward in powertrain performance and driving dynamics. While retaining its sharp edge, cleaner body lines deliver a notably more sophisticated and mature stance.

Key milestones:

2026 (Model Year Update): The NX range received strategic revisions, introducing a front-wheel drive (FWD) option across all 350h hybrid variants, extending the F SPORT Handling specification to all powertrain types, and debuting a more accessible Premium grade for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model to broaden its market appeal.

Market Performance

The NX commands substantial sales volumes across international markets, continuing to serve as the brand's undisputed volume seller.

Competitive landscape: On the global stage, the NX goes head-to-head with rivals such as the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Audi Q5. Backed by a sterling reputation for reliability and the standard-fit Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+) 3.0 active safety suite across all variants, the NX consistently retains leading residual values and customer satisfaction scores in the compact luxury SUV segment.

Owner feedback: Owners widely laud its exceptional cabin refinement, plush ride comfort, and fuss-free maintenance. While earlier iterations drew occasional criticism for their infotainment interface, the introduction of the new Lexus Interface has noticeably elevated the overall user experience.

Core Technologies

Powertrain architecture:

NX 350 (Turbocharged petrol): Powered by a 2.4-litre turbocharged engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, delivering punchy and responsive performance.

NX 350h (Hybrid): Pairs a 2.5-litre engine with an efficient electric motor to deliver a blend of performance and fuel economy, with the newly introduced FWD variant for 2026 lowering the barrier to entry.

NX 450h+ (Plug-in hybrid): Combines a 2.5-litre engine with a high-capacity battery pack to provide an all-electric range of approximately 37 miles, serving as the flagship variant with the highest power output and optimal efficiency.

Digital cockpit: Fitted with a 14.0-inch HD touchscreen infotainment display with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. The Digital Key feature enables users to lock, unlock, start, and remotely share vehicle access via their smartphone.

Active safety: Equipped with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 as standard across the range, integrating millimetre-wave radar and high-resolution cameras to provide advanced active safety features including the Pre-Collision System (PCS), Curve Speed Management, and Intersection Turn Assist.

Future Plans

As of June 2026, Lexus is directing the development of the NX towards:

Accelerated electrification: Leveraging its multi-powertrain platform to continuously optimise the energy efficiency and charging capabilities of its plug-in hybrid systems, complying with increasingly stringent global emissions standards.

Smart connectivity upgrades: Enhancing the Lexus Interface ecosystem via over-the-air (OTA) updates, while exploring the phased rollout of higher-level end-to-end driver assistance systems in the coming years.

Bespoke personalisation: Deepening the reach of the "F SPORT" badge by offering a broader selection of sports performance packages and distinctive colour options to cater to younger buyers seeking bespoke individuality.
